Denver Broncos Are Going To Be Major Players for RB Derrick Ward thumbnail

Per Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post, the Denver Broncos figure to be big players for running back Derrick Ward when he hits the free agent market next Friday.

No confirmation was given by Ward or any of his representatives, or any Broncos’ representatives for that matter. It seems as though this report is purely speculation, but it makes a lot of sense.

It is well documented that the Broncos put seven running backs on injured reserve last season, and it would not be a surprise if they brought in Ward for a visit.

Ward is already 28-years-old, but he has far less mileage than a common running back of that age. In 2008, he had a breakout year, rushing for 1,025 yards and two touchdowns.

While many wouldn’t consider that a breakout season, consider the fact that Ward was splitting time with two other running backs, both capable of being starters.

In addition to his prowess as a runner, the 5’11,” 228-pound Ward was one of the Giants’ best receivers. He had 41 receptions for 384 yards and nearly averaged a first down every time he caught the ball.

The Patriots’ offense featured a lot of screen passes and utilized the running back in pass plays very often, so the Broncos figure to use a similar scheme with Josh McDaniels at the helm.

Again, this is purely speculation, but don’t be surprised if Denver makes a run at the former Giants’ running back. He is big, deceptively fast, and is a great receiver. He could be the feature back that Denver has been lacking for three or four years.
